Its construction was commissioned to Tino di Camaino, but was Attanasio Primario to complete it. Of the original layout remains the gothic undergrounds, because the structure underwent various alterations, following the styles in vogue in the different eras in which they occurred. Thus, the baroque renovations between the end of the 1500 and 1600 are evident in the large cloister and nearby structures and in the interventions carried out by Cosimo Fanzago between 1623 and 1656 in every part of the Certosa, but above all in the church and in the apartment of the Vicar. In the sumptuous decorations with polychrome marble, is imprint is unmistakable. Rococò came in the 1700s, then oriental elements were added, present in the Quarto del Prior, during the reign of Charles of Bourbon. Left by the monks, after various events, in the first half of the 19th century, in 1867 it was opened to the public as a museum. The tour covers every interior spaces with their heritage of valuable architectural and artistic works. In addition, on display, 950 paintings from the School of Posillipo, portraits of the Bourbons, works between the 16th and 17th centuries, porcelain and antique carriages. Also of great interest are the ancient monks' apothecary and pharmacy.
