Castel dell'Ovo, on the little island of the mermaid Partenope

Megaride, the islet of yellow tuff, where according to the myth the siren Parthenope is buried, saw the rise at the end of the 8th century BC of the first nucleus of the new city founded by the Greeks of Cuma on the back of Mount Echia.

In Roman times, Lucullo built a large fortified villa on the sea there, where in 476 AD the last emperor Romulus Augustulus was exiled. Known in the Middle Ages as the islet of San Salvatore, it was also occupied by the Saracens. In the 12th century Roger the Norman established his residence there, then Frederick II made it the Reggia of the Swabian rulers that guarded the royal treasure. In the Angevin era, borrowed from the legend of Virgil Mago's egg, the name Castel dell’Ovo was established and then became impregnable with the Aragonese restructuring. A military function that remained until the Renaissance. After the restoration in 1975 it is now a congress center and museum space. Outside, on the islet connected to the city by an artificial isthmus, Borgo Marinari extends with renowned nautical clubs, bars and restaurants.
